The Start.
Katie is Canadian. Her Music Education was shaped by ensemble learning practices.
Learning music from a young age, Katie learnt to play many instruments in a variety of genre styles during her youth. Alto Saxophone in the marching band, Oboe in the Orchestra, alongside Flute, Clarinet, and Piano. She was a member of her high school’s Jazz Band and Choir, as well as 1st Chair Oboe in the BC Provincial Honour Band. Alongside this, she was actively involved with Musical Theatre. Katie understands the benefits of group music learning, because she experienced its benefits – right from the start.
The Next Step.
Katie’s University Education took place in both Canada and the United Kingdom.
Katie went to both Capilano University and The University of Bristol. It was her time at Capilano where Katie received 2 years of vocational training in Singing Performance. Then, at Bristol University she specialised in Musicology, and received a 1st Class BA (hons) in Music. Throughout her undergraduate studies, Katie developed a strong understanding of vocal mechanics – both in solo performance and choral settings.

The Career.
Katie has over 15 years experience teaching both privately and in schools. She has worked as a choral conductor by appointment, and created choral programmes from scratch.
Katie’s work experience is a hybrid of different learning environments. She has a proven track record of skills building in both private and group settings. Her approach is always holistic, ensuring students learn to understand the whole language of music. She is a specialist in tuition, and has developed theory programmes for schools and choirs. She believes that all genres can be sung, and follows Estill Voice Methods for ensuring students understand how to sing in different genres effectively.
The Masters.
Katie is undertaking an MA in Voice Pedagogy with The Voice Study Centre. Her specialism is in approaches to accents and phonetics within contemporary choral settings.
Katie’s pursuit of an MA in Voice Pedagogy has been transformative. After over a decade of practical work experience, she has been able to critically apply her experience to in-depth technical studies. She is in the process of designing and researching a new pedagogical process for incorporating accent awareness into contemporary choral settings.
